Free Geek es una organización comunitaria sin fines de lucro que reduce el impacto ambiental de los residuos electrónicos mediante la reutilización y el reciclado de tecnología donada. A través de la participación de la comunidad proporcionan educación, capacitación laboral, acceso a Internet y computadoras gratuitos o de bajo costo al público.
Geek libre es casi en su totalidad a base de voluntarios, de hecho, trabajan más de 900 voluntarios. Usted no necesita experiencia, le enseñaran todo lo que necesita saber. Si tiene conocimientos, es genial también!
¿CÓMO EMPEZAR?
Todos los voluntarios tienen que completar una orientación antes de empezar el voluntariado. CUANDO PUEDO SER VOLUNTARIO?
El servicio voluntario se lleva a cabo de de martes a sábado. Usted puede presentarse cuando le sea más conveniente, simplemente debe dejarlo saber en las oficinas de Free Geek para que ellos lo coloquen en agenda, no es necesario completar todas las horas de servicio voluntario en un solo día ni un número fijo de horas al mes. ¿CÓMO PUEDO OBTENER UNA COMPUTADORA GRATIS?
Si usted necesita una computadora, usted puede entrar en el Programa de Adopción de Ordenadores. Básicamente, después de acumular 24 horas de tiempo ayudando en Free Geek, usted puede obtener una computadora renovada de escritorio (CPU, monitor, mouse, teclado y altavoces). Free Geek is a nonprofit community organization that reduces the environmental impact of waste electronics by reusing and recycling donated technology. Through community engagement we provide education, job skills training, Internet access and free or low cost computers to the public.
HOW DO I START?
All volunteers are required to complete an orientation before they start volunteering. Orientations happen at Free Geek Wednesday and Saturday at 4:00 sharp, and take about 45 min. Please arrive at our phone desk by 4pm so we can start on time. You don’t need to phone ahead for an orientation; just show up.
WHEN CAN I VOLUNTEER?
Volunteers come in from Tuesday to Saturday. You will be able to volunteer when it’s convenient for you; just let us know so we can put you on the schedule. You don’t have to volunteer the same day all the time, or a set number of hours per month. We’re flexible, and just happy you want to help out.
HOW DO I GET A FREE COMPUTER?
If you need a computer, you can get into our Computer Adoption Program. Basically, after you accumulate 24 hours of time helping out at Free Geek, you get a free refurbished desktop computer (system, monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers). We call this computer a GeekBox; it will be running Ubuntu Linux and come with all the programs you need to do most everything. We also give you a class on how to use it, as well as ongoing technical support. Just let us know at your orientation that you want to be enrolled in the Adoption Program.
It’s important to us to give people get a decent home computer that is fast enough to make their computing experience both fun and worthwhile. You will be able to do the usual things like surf the Internet, do word processing & email, watch movies, edit your photos, make posters and play Solitaire.
